Injection molding, also known as plastic injection molding, is a production technology that can repeatedly produce plastic parts or products in large quantities. This kind of mold relies on one or more cavities formed after the molded parts are assembled to form the shape of the plastic parts we need. Injection molding is the most complex structure of all plastic molds, the highest design, manufacturing, and processing precision, and the most widely used method. In addition, some manufacturers also use silicone injection molding technology to process silicone materials.

Injection Molding Product Classification

There are many ways to classify injection molded products. According to the different basic structures of the injection mold pouring system, it can be divided into three categories: the first type is the two-plate mold, also known as the large nozzle injection molding, the second type is the three-plate mold, also called the thin nozzle injection molding, and the third type is the hot runner mold, also called runner less injection molding.

1.Two Plate Mold

The two-plate mold uses large nozzle or single-parting surface injection molding. The two-plate mold is the simplest and most commonly used method in injection molding. It divides the entire mold into two parts, the movable mold, and the fixed mold, with the parting surface as the boundary.

2.Three Plate Mold

Three-plate molds are commonly known as thin-mouth molds or double-parting surface molds. The three-plate mold is divided into three parts after opening. Compared with the two-plate mold, it has an additional stripper plate (commonly known as the nozzle plate). It is suitable for occasions where there must be no gate marks around the plastic part or the projected area is large and multiple feeding points are required. , This kind of mold uses point gates, the structure is complex, and a fixed distance parting mechanism needs to be designed.

3.Simplified Three-plate Mold:

  • Since the simplified three-plate mold has four fewer movable mold guide pillars than the standard three-plate mold, the fixed mold guide pillars must simultaneously guide the devouring plate, fixed mold A plate, and movable mold B plate, L≥A+B+20, other precautions are the same as the standard three-plate mold.
  • The precision and stiffness of the simplified three-plate mold are worse than the standard three-plate type, and the lifespan is not as good as the standard three-plate type.

4.Hot Runner Mold

Hot runner mold is also called runner injection molding. The hot runner mold has the advantage of the two-plate type in that the operation is simple, and the three-plate type that the melt can enter from any point in the cavity. In addition, the hot runner mold has no loss of melt pressure, temperature, and time in the runner, so it not only improves the molding quality of the mold but also shortens the molding cycle of the mold.

Basic Components of Injection Mold

The injection mold system mainly consists of a pouring system, a molding system, a lateral core pulling system, an ejection reset system, a temperature control system, an exhaust system, and a guide and positioning system.

1.Molding System

Molded parts are parts that make up the mold cavity, including internal mold inserts, cores, and side core pulls. Internal mold inserts include concave molds and punches, which are parts that give the molded plastic parts shape and size.

2.Gating System

The gating system is a transition channel in the mold before the melt enters the cavity. Its function is to guide the molten plastic from the nozzle of the injection molding machine to the closed mold cavity. Including the main channel, runner, gate, and cold material cavity. In addition to the cold runner pouring system, the pouring system also has a hot runner pouring system.

3.Temperature Control System

This part of the structure that controls the mold temperature within a reasonable range is called the temperature control system. It includes both cooling and heating, but most of them require cooling. The injection mold temperature control system includes cooling water pipes, cooling water wells, beryllium copper cooling, etc. The temperature control media include water, oil, beryllium copper, and air.

4.Ejection Reset System

The demoulding system, also called the push-out system or ejection system, is a mechanism that enables plastic parts to escape from the mold safely and without damage. Its structure is complex and comes in various forms. The most commonly used ones are push rod push-out, push tube push-out, push plate push-out, and pneumatic push-out. Push-out, automatic thread molding, and composite push-out, etc.

5.Guidance and Positioning System

The guide and positioning system consists of two parts: the guide system and the positioning system. The guide system mainly includes the guide posts and sleeves of the moving and fixed molds and the guide grooves of the lateral core-pulling mechanism; the positioning system mainly includes the side lock and the cone positioning structure, etc.

6.Side cCore Pulling System

When there are convex, concave, hole, and other structures on the side of the plastic part, the lateral core (or insert) must be pulled out before the plastic part is pushed out, so that the plastic part can be molded smoothly. The lateral core-pulling mechanism includes inclined guide posts, slide blocks, inclined slide blocks, inclined push rods, bent pins, T-shaped buckles, hydraulic cylinders and springs, and other positioning parts.

7.Exhaust System

The exhaust system is a mold structure that expels air from the mold cavity when the melt is filled and allows air to enter the cavity in time when the mold is opened to avoid creating a vacuum. Generally speaking, a structure that can exhaust air can also admit air. Exhaust methods include parting surface exhaust, exhaust groove exhaust, insert exhaust, push rod exhaust, exhaust needle exhaust, breathable metal exhaust plug exhaust, etc.
